The at-home consultation

Construction is disruptive enough. The estimate shouldn't be.

We don't employ salespeople. Your consultation is a conversation with an owner about what your pool needs, why it needs it, and how to keep the work in good shape for years afterward.

  • You meet the owners

David Callahan or his son-in-law George Knoeller II are the only people who come out for an estimate.

  • Nobody is on commission

There's no sale to close during your consultation, so there's no pressure to close one.

  • No contracts in the truck

No “today only” pricing and no appointment-only discounts. Take the time you need to decide.

  • No deposit at the visit

We will never ask for a deposit while we're at your home.

What we do

Every in-ground concrete and gunite pool, whoever built it.

Repairs and complete renovations on residential and commercial pools and spas — about 140 jobs a year across Southeastern Pennsylvania & Northern Delaware.

  • Freeform pool with a fresh dark-gray plaster finish and deep blue-green water

    Pool plastering

Full preparation, repair and resurfacing with Diamond Brite aggregate plaster, troweled smooth by hand and filled the same day.

    • Diamond Brite only
    • Bond Kote prep
    • Steps, benches & loveseats
  • Curved entry steps with tile trim leading to a raised spa and stamped concrete deck

    Tile & coping

Custom perimeter tile, coping, spa walls and step trim, rebuilt or installed to protect your plaster and keep the edge safe for swimmers.

    • Brick, paver, concrete & stone
    • Spa walls & trim tile
    • Bond beam repairs
  • Rectangular pool with concrete coping and deck joints around the edge

    Expansion-joint caulking

We clean out and reseal the joint between coping and deck with polyurethane caulk, so water can't freeze and thaw its way under your tile and coping.

    • Polyurethane sealant
    • Prevents freeze-thaw damage
  • Round spa with a ring of tan accent tile set into the bench

    Repairs, large & small

Don't need a full renovation? We reset or replace coping, repair tile, spa walls and skimmers, patch plaster (some patches underwater) and fix rust spots.

    • Plaster patches & pop-offs
    • Rust spots from exposed rebar
    • Skimmer & spa tile

Not sure whether we do the work you need? Ask. If it involves the shell, tile, coping or plaster, we can probably help.

Plaster & color

You're choosing a water color, not a plaster color.

A pool is seen from across the yard far more than from the edge. Size, depth, shade, sun and time of day all change how the water reads, so we help you choose for the view you'll actually live with.

One pool, one day, three angles. Every photo above is the same medium gray finish.

Which water do you want to look at?

The most requested look, a slightly deeper and more natural blue, comes from light to medium gray plaster, not blue. Hand-troweled color always shows some lighter and darker areas. That's natural, and if it gives you pause, we'll suggest a colored pool to go see in person before you decide.

  • Intense Caribbean blue
  • Deeper, natural blue
  • Lake-like greenish blue

Our plaster, on paper

Finish
Diamond Brite aggregate plaster (since 2018)
Not offered
Diamond Brite Watercolors line
Bond coat
Diamond Brite Bond Kote
Surface
Troweled smooth, never acid-exposed
Fill
Same day as application
Warranty
SGM 10-year cost-of-material*

Why smooth? Acid-exposing shows off the quartz but leaves a surface that can turn abrasive over the years. Troweled smooth, the aggregate surfaces gradually with normal water chemistry, so the finish stays comfortable and gains strength.

*Offered by SGM when the warranty form is completed within 30 days of application and monthly water-maintenance printouts are kept. National Plasterers Council member since 2003.

Our crews

We don't subcontract. You'll know who's at your pool.

An applicator's experience shows directly in a finished surface. Ours learned the trade inside this company, often starting by prepping pools for plaster.

Plaster crew

7 people

Led by foremen Francisco and Paul, plastering with us since 1999 and 1996

Three trowelers and two mixers round out the crew. Everyone else on it has been with the company since at least 2005. They plaster 40–60 residential pools a year and handle plaster repairs: steps, cracks, pop-offs and rust spots.

Tile & coping crews

2 crews of 3

Led by Ramon and Marco

Ramon has been with us 26 years and installing custom tile, coping, stone and pavers since 1999, including structural bond-beam repairs. Marco started in 2002 and specializes in spa walls, cantilevered decks, resetting stone coping and pavers. Each works with a partner of 10+ years.

Questions

Good to know before anyone visits.

The more you understand about the work and why it's needed, the easier it is to compare estimates and take care of the finish afterward.

Do you work on pools another company built?

Yes. We repair and renovate all types of in-ground concrete and gunite pools and spas, whoever installed them, for both homes and commercial properties.

Where do you work?

Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware, from our base on Phoenixville Pike in West Chester.

What plaster finish do you use?

Since 2018 we only install Diamond Brite aggregate plaster (not the Watercolors line), prepped with Diamond Brite Bond Kote. We trowel it smooth instead of acid-exposing it, so the surface stays comfortable underfoot while normal water chemistry gradually exposes the aggregate over time.

Why does colored plaster look lighter and darker in places?

Hand-troweled plaster naturally varies, and colored plaster shows it more. The National Plasterers Council notes colored plaster may show streaks, uneven color and checking; these are normal and not defects. If that worries you, see a colored pool in person before deciding.

Is there a warranty?

SGM offers a 10-year cost-of-material warranty on Diamond Brite pools when the warranty form is completed within 30 days of application and monthly water-maintenance records are kept.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Our Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor license number is PA027036, and we're fully insured. Ask and we'll send a copy of our certificate of insurance.

Will I be asked for a deposit at the consultation?

Never. Consultations are free, and we don't carry contracts or ask for a deposit during the visit.
